SpaceXAI Apple Antitrust Lawsuit Dropped, Judge Wants Answers

A lawsuit rarely vanishes without a trace, especially one accusing a trillion-dollar company of anti-competitive behavior. That’s exactly what happened this week when the SpaceXAI Apple antitrust lawsuit came to an abrupt and unexplained end. Elon Musk’s companies, X Corp. and SpaceXAI, withdrew their claims against Apple without disclosing whether any settlement had been reached. Now, the judge overseeing the case wants answers before letting the matter rest quietly.

    What Happened in Court

U.S. District Court Judge Mark Pittman, who presides over the case in the Fort Worth Division, issued a short but pointed order on September 15. He directed the plaintiffs to submit, for private review, any agreements connected to the resolution of their claims against Apple. In other words, the court wants to see what was negotiated behind closed doors, even if the public never does.

This request follows Monday’s filing, in which X Corp. and SpaceXAI formally closed their antitrust claims against Apple. Neither company revealed the terms of the resolution. That silence appears to have caught the judge’s attention.

OpenAI’s Role in the Ongoing Case

The lawsuit didn’t target Apple alone. OpenAI remains a defendant, and that portion of the litigation is still very much alive. Shortly after the Apple claims were dropped, OpenAI filed an emergency motion asking the plaintiffs to explain why they moved to dismiss part of the case. Essentially, OpenAI wants clarity on what changed and whether it affects the arguments still being made against it.

This creates an unusual dynamic. One defendant exits the case under mysterious circumstances, while the co-defendant is left asking the court to force transparency. Meanwhile, the judge appears to share that concern, since the in-camera review request signals genuine skepticism about how the settlement was reached.

    The Original Allegations Against Apple

The lawsuit was originally filed last year, and its central claim was serious: Apple had allegedly been deprioritizing rival AI chatbot apps within the App Store. According to CNBC’s coverage of the original filing, the suit accused Apple of teaming up with OpenAI to protect its smartphone dominance. The complaint described Apple as working with “the company that most benefits from inhibiting competition and innovation in AI,” painting OpenAI as a dominant force in the generative AI chatbot market that Apple had chosen to favor.

That accusation formed the backbone of the case against Apple. Therefore, its sudden and quiet dismissal raises an obvious question: what, if anything, was exchanged to make the claims disappear?
