Robot mowers have made real progress recently. Onboard NRTK satellite connectivity, LiDAR navigation, and vision cameras now let these machines find their way around a yard without buried guide wires or installed satellite receivers. Despite that progress, robot mowers still struggle with one basic task: cutting grass right up against buildings and sidewalks.
A New Trend Hits a Familiar Wall
At IFA 2026, several manufacturers unveiled robot mowers with articulating arms that extend outward to solve exactly this problem. Unfortunately, American consumers likely won’t get to use them anytime soon. Like foreign-made robot vacuums before them, these devices fall under a US ban.
Why the Ban Blocks These Robots
An FCC FAQ explains that the ban on “advanced robotic devices” exists to prevent “unacceptable risks to the national security of the United States,” and it applies to devices “capable of locomotion, obstacle avoidance, navigation, or movement on the ground.” Robot mowers clearly fit that description. When I asked manufacturers at IFA about US availability, none expressed much confidence. Most gave similar answers, including one representative who said the company was still “working to understand current U.S. regulations.”
Security Concerns Don’t Fully Explain the Ban
Regulators do have legitimate reasons to worry about connected robots, since security vulnerabilities show up in them fairly often. In one notable case, a hacker took control of a Yarbo automower and drove it over The Verge reporter Sean Hollister’s body to prove the point. Still, the ban doesn’t clearly solve that problem. Sellers can continue importing and selling any robot already approved for the US market, and current owners can keep using the devices they already bought.
The Edging Problem the Industry Is Racing to Fix

Even as robot mowers have improved, they’ve never handled grass along walls or over sidewalk edges well. The best solution so far comes from devices like the Segway Navimow X4, which slides its mowing deck closer to obstacles but still leaves homeowners to finish the job with a weed whacker or manual edger.
How New Robotic Arms Solve It
The robot mower ban I saw at IFA 2026 tackle this problem in strikingly similar ways: each one adds an arm that swings out from the main body to reach grass the mower itself can’t cut. The Segway Navimow H5 Pro opens a side panel to extend its mowing blades. The Dreame A4 AWD Pro relies on a string-trimmer arm instead. The Mammotion Yuba 4 AWD offers an optional bolt-on accessory that adds the same capability. The Eufy Lawn Mower S2 Max goes further, letting its trimmer arm pivot horizontal for cutting grass near walls and vertical for edging along sidewalks.
When Could the Ban Lift?
Nobody can say for certain how long American buyers will wait for this feature. A Roborock representative told me he hoped President Trump’s planned summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping in late September might shift the administration’s stance on the ban. Individual manufacturers could also pursue special exemptions. Short of one of those outcomes, or a Democrat-controlled Congress emerging from the November midterms and moving quickly to reverse or revise the policy, the wait could stretch on for years. The US doesn’t have a dormant domestic robotics manufacturing base ready to step in and fill the gap.
