Goal Zero Yeti 3000X Recall: Fire Risk Fixed via Firmware Update

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced a recall of the Goal Zero Yeti 3000X portable power station after discovering that its circuit board can overheat and potentially start a fire. The good news for owners: the fix doesn’t require returning the unit, since a firmware update resolves the defect.

Weighing 92 pounds and priced at $3,000, the Yeti 3000X commonly powers worksites, campsites, and homes during outages. Consumers purchased the units through REI, Costco, Back Country, and Goalzero.com, among other retailers, between May 2020 and August 2025, according to the CPSC recall notice.

What Triggered the Recall

Goal Zero has logged four incidents involving units that overheated, smoked, or caught fire. No injuries have been reported so far. Roughly 46,000 units sold across the country need the update, and the company has released a step-by-step video walking owners through the process.

How to Update the Firmware

Owners can install the fix through the Goal Zero mobile app, available on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. Once downloaded, the update is located under Settings, then Firmware Update. The Yeti 3000X’s built-in display will show progress during installation, and a successful update will register as version 1.9.5. Goal Zero stresses that even units currently running without issue still need the update installed. The power stations are manufactured in China, while Goal Zero itself is headquartered in Utah.

Getting Support

Customers with questions can reach Goal Zero by phone at 888-794-6250, staffed from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday, or by emailing support@goalzero.com. A support request form is also available on the company’s recall support page.

A Pattern of Fire-Related Recalls

This isn’t Goal Zero’s first fire-related recall. The company pulled its Yeti 25A Fast Charge power supplies in 2020 over overheating concerns, followed by its EC8 Power Cables in 2021. In 2024, the company recalled its Yeti Link Expansion Modules and EC8 Cables after they overheated and melted, and in 2025 it recalled its Solar Series Combiner cables for the same reason.
