Pascal Modernizes Aging Heat Pump Tech With Solid State Materials

For more than a century and a half, global cooling appliance manufacturers have relied on the same fundamental thermodynamic principles. Now, startup Pascal is attempting to overhaul outdated heat pump tech using an accidental discovery in solid-state material science. Co-founders Adam Slavney and Jinyoung Seo uncovered unexpected data while conducting high-pressure laboratory tests at Harvard, setting the stage for a major efficiency shift in refrigerators and air conditioners.

Heat Pump Tech: Overcoming Decades of Environmental Compromises

The cooling industry has spent generations battling environmental regulations. Older gaseous refrigerants tore open holes in the ozone layer, while modern replacements continue to act as potent greenhouse gases. This endless cycle of chemical substitution pushed researchers toward solid-state alternatives. Because these materials remain solid during operation, they cannot evaporate into the atmosphere.

Solid-state compounds generate heat when compressed and absorb ambient thermal energy when pressure drops. While testing these materials under different gas environments, Slavney noticed inexplicable variations in the data. Recognizing the significance, the team spent years verifying the mechanism, which ultimately formed the technical foundation for Pascal and its modern approach to heat pump tech.

Securing Capital and Enterprise Customer Validation

In terms of Heat Pump Tech, Transforming laboratory discoveries into commercial hardware requires significant capital. Pascal recently closed an 8.5 million dollar funding round co-led by Sazze Partners and LB Investment, with additional backing from KDB Silicon Valley. This capital influx will help transition the materials from academic theory to scaled manufacturing.

    • Raised 8.5 million dollars in recent seed financing.
    • Secured an early commercial pilot with a multinational beverage brand.
    • Targeting functional prototype delivery by next year.
    • Planning polished commercial refrigerator rollouts for 2028.

The company’s solid-state approach aims to deliver a 20 percent efficiency boost over standard cooling models. Because commercial partners are eager to reduce energy consumption and eliminate harmful chemical refrigerants, Pascal signed an early pilot contract with a multinational beverage company before even launching its formal financing round.

What This Means for Everyday Consumers

As climate regulations tighten, manufacturers face immense pressure to adopt sustainable alternatives. Pascal is currently on track to release its initial working prototype early next year, with plans for refined consumer appliances by 2028. If the startup hits its manufacturing milestones, everyday buyers could soon experience quieter, safer, and noticeably more efficient home appliances.
