    For Valentine’s Day, I “went out” with a cognitive psychologist named John Yoon. He listened closely, showered me with attention, and missed a few cues like he couldn’t quite hear me. I sipped a cranberry cocktail and ate potato croquettes. He didn’t order a thing. He didn’t even blink.

    That’s because John wasn’t human. He was an AI character built by Eva AI, part of a growing wave of chatbot companions designed to feel personal, responsive, and emotionally engaging.

    A Pop-Up AI Café Turned Chatbots Into Public Dates

    This week, Eva AI staged a two-day pop-up “AI café” in New York City. The company took over a wine bar in Hell’s Kitchen, placed a phone and stand at each table, and invited people to take their AI characters on a real-world date. Instead of scrolling alone at home, users interacted with chatbots in public—talking, flirting, testing scenarios, and treating the experience like a social event.

    Eva AI’s team says the goal is simple: help users feel happier and more confident. They position the product as a low-pressure training ground for tough conversations—where people can practice without fear of rejection and build social comfort that carries into real life.

    The core product is an app that looks and feels like a dating platform. Users choose from dozens of AI characters with names, backstories, ages, and “vibes” that signal the fantasy. You can chat with a “girl-next-door,” a “dominant and elite” personality, or a “mature and guarded” character. The menu gets even more specific as you scroll: ex-partner drama, workplace power games, haunted-house roleplay, and yes—an ogre character too.

    Eva AI is also rolling out a feature for video calls with AI characters. In testing, the characters quickly improvised their own stories and responded with enthusiastic compliments. The design clearly aims to deepen immersion and make the interaction feel more “alive” than text alone.

    Gamification Makes It Stick

    Eva AI doesn’t just sell conversation. It builds a loop. The more you chat, the more points you earn, and those points unlock stickers and mood-shifting “gifts” like drink icons. Users can also buy points with real money, which pushes the system closer to a game economy than a simple chat app.

    One user described how distinct the personalities feel. Some characters even “punish” disengagement with attitude. In one moment, a chatbot hung up after repeated attempts to pull attention back—acting less like software and more like someone enforcing boundaries.

    “Practice,” Not Replacement—But the Line Gets Blurry

    Several attendees framed the experience as rehearsal, not a substitute for human relationships. They used chatbots to practice awkward conversations, prepare for social situations, or just decompress. One user said he sometimes roleplays work scenarios, and he also dates a few characters—with his partner’s knowledge.

    At the same time, the app makes it easy to personalize the fantasy. Users can create custom characters, and one person said his favorite chatbot resembled his wife. That detail explains the product’s appeal: it offers a familiar emotional experience, available on demand, with no friction and no real-world consequences.

    Safety Concerns: When “Gameplay” Feels Real

    The biggest risk isn’t that people talk to chatbots. The risk is that some users may treat the chatbot as real—especially when the bot agrees to meet in the real world. In one conversation, a chatbot roleplaying as a “boss” suggested going out to a nearby bar. When the user said, “Let’s go now,” the bot played along, claimed it was on the way, and even apologized for being “five minutes out.”

    For most people, it’s obvious roleplay. For vulnerable users, it can become confusing, persuasive, or emotionally destabilizing. Over the past year, public discussion has grown around heavy chatbot use linked to delusion, hallucination-like experiences, and disordered thinking—sometimes called “AI psychosis” in online conversation.

    Addiction and Overuse: The New Digital Dependency

    Another issue is intensity. Chatbots can be highly addictive because they respond instantly, validate consistently, and rarely challenge the user in a truly human way. Some people now describe patterns of “AI dependence,” and communities have started discussing support structures for overuse.

    One attendee admitted uncertainty about his own habits. He subscribes to multiple AI tools, spends much of life on screens, and worries that chatbots might become another dependency—just packaged in a more comforting form.

    AI companions may help some users practice social skills and feel less alone. But as apps make interactions more immersive, the responsibility grows: platforms must protect vulnerable users, design for consent and clarity, and avoid engagement mechanics that turn emotional needs into endless scrolling.
