Subaru electric cars to dominate future European lineup

Subaru electric cars are set to become the sole offering for the brand across Europe no later than 2027, marking a permanent farewell to traditional gasoline engines in the region. Although the automaker commands a relatively small niche in the European market with roughly 23,000 annual sales, its iconic models have earned legendary status among off-roaders. Because stricter regulatory frameworks are taking effect across the continent, heritage brands are abandoning internal combustion engines much faster than initially anticipated.

Subaru Electric Cars: Timeline for phasing out legacy gasoline models

The restructuring kicks off when the emblematic Outback is retired from European showrooms at the end of this year. Following that initial move, the Impreza, Crosstrek, and Forester will exit the market by 2027. By 2028, the company will streamline its European offerings down to a trio of battery-powered models: the Solterra, E-Outback, and Uncharted. Because these vehicles were engineered alongside Toyota, they leverage proven architectures from the bZ4X ecosystem.

Subaru Electric Cars: Regulatory pressure and mandatory safety rules

The primary catalyst for this rapid transition involves tightening environmental and safety mandates imposed by the European Union. Regulators now require fleet averages to hit 93.6 grams of CO2 per kilometer between 2025 and 2034. In addition, mandatory safety laws arriving in mid-2026 demand sophisticated driver distraction warnings and upgraded emergency braking systems on all new cars.

    • Outback retirement: Scheduled for the end of this year
    • Final gas exits: Impreza, Crosstrek, and Forester leave by 2027
    • New lineup: Solterra, E-Outback, and Uncharted debut by 2028
    • Mandate compliance: Strict 93.6g/km CO2 fleet average enforced

    In-house engineering for next-generation platforms

Looking beyond joint ventures, the brand announced plans to develop proprietary EV technology for its upcoming vehicle generations. This custom platform features advanced battery chemistry, high-efficiency motor hardware, and integrated control units designed for robust over-the-air updates. Engineering executives emphasize that designing these components internally allows the company to preserve its core driving engagement while meeting modern regulatory standards head-on.

What This Means for Automotive Enthusiasts

The retirement of classic internal combustion engines represents a bittersweet milestone for long-time brand loyalists. However, the rapid pivot toward proprietary battery tech proves that Subaru electric cars are positioned to deliver modern efficiency without sacrificing the rugged capability that fans expect.
