Japan Cybersecurity Emergency: Ransomware Hits 53 Firms

Japan is in the middle of a cybersecurity emergency, and the pressure on companies and regulators keeps growing. The Financial Times reports that a wave of attacks has led officials to declare a state of emergency in cyberspace. Regulators are now searching for ways to shield financial institutions from serious disruption.

The country has not yet reached the cyber apocalypse that AI companies have warned about. Even so, the damage is already alarming. Here is what we know so far.

Ransomware Attacks Trigger an Emergency Response

Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party called an emergency meeting of its National Cybersecurity Office. The goal was to address a string of attacks on several of the country’s key companies.

Kyodo News, citing the National Police Agency, reports that ransomware has hit at least 53 companies. Authorities have not named most of the victims. However, reports say the targets include manufacturers, construction firms, hospitals, and schools.

Bookoff and East Japan Railway Confirm Breaches

Two companies have publicly confirmed they were hacked. They are the second-hand goods retailer Bookoff Group and the rail operator East Japan Railway Company. Reports indicate that more than 6 million customer records may have been compromised.

Because these brands serve millions of everyday customers, the exposure of personal data could have wide consequences.

    Banks Tighten Identity Checks

The fallout reaches beyond online systems. According to the Financial Times, Japan’s financial regulator has told banks not to accept driver’s licenses as proof of identity for new accounts.

This warning followed a breach at the car rental brand Times Car. Hackers stole a large collection of digital ID images from the company. The concern is that criminals could use such images to open accounts under false identities.

Why Japan Is a Target-Rich Environment

Artificial intelligence plays a part in this surge. AI tools have lowered the barrier to entry for hackers, so attackers need less skill to find and hit victims.

However, Japan looks vulnerable even without AI. InCyber News reported last year that the country is a prime target because of outdated IT systems and chronic underinvestment in cyber defenses. In other words, attackers have plenty of weak points to exploit.

South Korea Faces a Similar Wave

Japan is not the only country under pressure. Reuters reports that South Korea is also facing a barrage of attacks, and financial institutions and churches have fallen victim.

In addition, cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike published a report on the offensives. The firm claims a Chinese-developed AI agent built on Anthropic’s Claude Code likely carried them out. Readers should treat this as CrowdStrike’s assessment rather than an established fact.

What the Japan Cybersecurity Emergency Means for Businesses

The Japan cybersecurity emergency shows how quickly a ransomware wave can spread across industries. Manufacturers, hospitals, schools, and transport firms all appear on the list of targets.
