Only 8% of Managers See Real AI Investment Returns

The global finance sector is experiencing a massive reality check regarding automated algorithms and AI investment returns. A comprehensive joint study by Morgan Stanley and Oliver Wyman highlights a stark disconnect between technology adoption and actual profitability. While software vendors promise revolutionary gains, only 8 percent of asset managers can actually link better portfolio performance to their new software tools.

The findings draw heavily from the Mercer 2026 AI in Asset Management Survey. That data reveals over half of all surveyed firms have already embedded automation into parts of their daily operations. Another 27 percent are testing out pilot projects. Despite this widespread deployment, the financial windfall has remained stubbornly low.

    Operational Wins Versus Bottom-Line Gains

Firms are quick to praise the operational perks of machine learning, even if profit margins tell a different story. Nearly 70 percent of investment companies report smoother workflows, while over half praise the speed of data processing. However, only a quarter of these firms have managed to slash their overall operating expenses.

    • 69% notice faster operational workflows
    • 24% report actual cost reductions
    • 13% use code for portfolio construction
    • Just 8% track higher AI investment returns

Most companies restrict algorithms to research desks and data ingestion rather than high-stakes portfolio decisions. Because human traders still control final execution in most houses, the technology acts as a fancy calculator rather than a portfolio manager.

    Can Algorithms Beat the Market?

The core question facing Wall Street is whether faster research leads to winning stock picks. According to the report, whether this broader research breadth translates into persistent market alpha remains entirely unproven. Meanwhile, check out broader analysis on financial technology trends shaping modern markets.

Although productivity is up, enterprise-level profits are lagging behind the hype cycle.

The Bottom Line for Market Participants

Ultimately, the financial sector is discovering that buying expensive software does not automatically equal beating the index. Until institutions learn how to turn raw computational speed into smarter trading strategies, measurable AI investment returns will stay out of reach for the vast majority of fund managers.
